Strategic management is the discipline that involves the creation and implementation of business plans that help a company achieve its goals. It can involve all managerial activities, including setting goals and determining what steps are required to accomplish the objectives. This involves evaluating strategies and making adjustments. For a career as a strategist, a degree, experience in management or leadership positions, and mentorship can all be helpful qualifications.

The first step of the process of strategic management is goal-setting. In this step, leaders define the company’s mission and the ethos. They also set objectives for the operation. They then define and set specific SMART goals that are measurable feasible, achievable, and relevant. Leadership teams should review these goals and the KPIs that support them every year to ensure that they are still on track.

Strategic managers analyze the factors that impact the organization’s performance. This includes the competitive environment, economic trends, and potential risks and benefits. Then they use the information to devise strategic options to assist a business overcome its obstacles and reach its goals.

The third stage of strategic management is implementation which is the actual implementation of the strategy chosen. This requires a high level of communication, coordination and resources to ensure the strategies are in place across all departments as well as levels of the business. It also requires assessing the business decisions of different departments and making sure they align with the strategic plan. It is essential to inform employees regularly how the work they do every day contributes to meeting the goals set in the strategic planning process, and how these goals are connected to the objectives of the company.
